KNOW THE THREAT

Deed theft is real, it is growing, and it targets our communities. Understanding how it works is your first line of defense.

Deed theft happens when someone illegally transfers ownership of your property without your knowledge or consent. Scammers forge documents, file them with the city, and suddenly they "own" your home. They can then sell it, take out loans against it, or evict you from the home you've lived in for decades. This disproportionately targets Black, Latino, and immigrant homeowners - especially the elderly and those with inherited properties.
